SYLLABUS

This syllabus is based on one set by Hirokaza Kanazawa Sensei for international use by Shotokan Kyu Grade students.

Sensei Balwant Singh Sahans has added his own assessments of senior students in accordance with the principles of SKO. The relationship between Kihon Kata and Kumite is particularly important. The relevance to karate of linked martial arts such aikido, kobudo and judo also needs to be understood at senior level.

At senior level learning through self-analysis, to deepen understanding of the above, is also important.  As preparation for coaching, senior students should be able to articulate and demonstrate key aspects of techniques, connections between techniques and extensions to techniques which demonstrate their broad applicability.

Coaches are advised that although the repertoire of teaching within clubs may vary according to preferences, the grading structure and content will follow closely the content described in this syllabus. Central to student progress are the Dojo Kun, Niju Kun, and Dojo Etiquette.

A 4 month gap, at least, should be observed between gradings from 9th Kyu to 3rd Kyu inclusive. From 3rd Kyu to 1st Dan a 6 month period is appropriate.  3rd Kyu gradings, and above, are conducted by a grading panel.
